Tourist's description Of Balaklav
To the south of Sevastopol, in fifteen kilometers, Balaklava was picturesquely stretched. The city and its outskirts have a peculiar look: there are unique monuments of Fiolent and Aya natural capes, and the ruins of the majestic Genoese fortress of Chembalo, and the vestiges of the temples, blown upon poetic legends.
Myths and age-old legends, evidence of the scientists and travelers, historians and poets, excite anyone, touching to its ancient history!
In 2004 a city was marked by a 2500-years-old anniversary!
Perhaps, a summer and autumn are the best time for rest. The temperature of the air in the day-time achieves 27-33 degrees on the average from the middle of June to the end of October. Sea-water is simply wonderful and does not go down below than 23 degrees at this time.
All of three chines of the Crimean Mountains begin on the territory of Balaklavian district at the Fiolent cape - External, Internal and Main.
The unique Balaklavian bay embeds in dry land on a 1,5 km, its width reaches from 128 to 425 m, its depth is 38 m at an entrance, and in different points is approximately 17 m. It is significant the entry in the Bay practically is not visible from a seaside, and only boundary beacons, located on the banks, designate the scope of harbor. Exactly there were a few ten of the English sailing vessels not able to find an entry in the bay and broke against rocks in the strong gale of November, 2 (14), 1854. Among them there was a legendary steamship “The Prince” together with which 30 small casks of ringing English gold went away under water! Until now nobody knows the exact place of death “The Prince”, and all attempts to find treasures were not crowned with success. There is another legend - the old-timers of Balaklava city talk that, have strolled on a coast after a gale, it is possible to find gold chinks grinded by sea...
The beaches of Balaklava city are very peculiar. The best of them are located in the district of the Fiolent cape – “Monastirsky” (Jasper) and “Admiralsky” alongside, and also Silver (Neighboring, Mikro-Yalo is the Small bank), to which cutters and skiffs walk in a bathing season. The Megalo-yalo (Large bank) was stretched after them, so called Gold beach. There is a small city beach shackled in a concrete on the Nazukin quay. There are also the comfortable beaches on any taste: sandy, with multicolored pebble and fantastical rocks in the district of the Aya cape and natural tract “Injir”. But it is necessary to consider that the Aya cape is a state reserve. It is created in 1982 and occupies the land area in approximately 1340 hectares and the area of water in 208 hectares adjacent to it. The Ayya cape, natural tract of Ayaz'ma, Batiliman and adjoining to them water area are the protection zone.
The protected status is devoted also to Chernorechensky (Black river) canyon, to the Baydarskaya valley, to the natural tract “The Laspi Rocks” and to the Fiolent cape located on the territory of Balaklavian district... Many natural landscapes of Balaklava city are simply unique.
To see Balaklava entirely, to feel deeply its beauty, the best of all is to walk up Cliff (the Fortress Mountain), from where a city and its outskirts are visible as on a palm from the east bank of the bay. In any weather it is smelled by sea: by fish, iodine and some water-plants.
It is more comfortable to reach Balaklava through Sevastopol. From Simferopol to Sevastopol you could go by an electric railway or a bus from the railway station in the distance at 76 km; from Yalta - by a bus - to the bus terminal of Sevastopol (85 km).
To reach Balaklava from Sevastopol you should go by busses or route taxis ¹ 17, 20, 26 going to 5 km of Balaklavsky highway from the railway station and bus terminal, and from there you need to use busses and rout taxis ¹ 9, 99, 97 going to the bus station “Square of the 1th May”.
